Based on the 1992 smash hit comedy of the same name, Sister Act tells the tale of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva who goes into protective custody after witnessing a murder... taking cover in the one place cops are sure she won't be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. But Deloris soon breathes new life into the congregation and her sisters with a song and a dance move or two.

. production history .

Beth was involved in both of the American productions of Sister Act. The show premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in California on 24 October 2006 and closed on 23 December 2006. It then moved to the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, where it ran from 17 January - 25 February 2007. [more details on the production]

The show is currently playing at the London Palladium in the West End, with talk of a possible Broadway transfer at some point in 2010.

. trivia .

  • Beth was not the first actress cast as the timid Sister Mary Robert. Alli Mauzey, of Cry-Baby and Wicked fame, had originally landed the part in early readings of the show. However, director Peter Schneider felt that, while Mauzey was technically hitting the difficult notes in her solo, she wasn't  quite achieving the emotion required for the part. Beth, who had earlier worked with Schneider on a production of Grand Hotel, eventually took over the role. [source]
